TSPLOST – Transportation Projects & Financials

Feb 20, 2022 | Announcements

A Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST) is a 1% sales tax collected for a specific program of transportation projects. For a TSPLOST to be enacted, it must be approved by voters in a referendum.

Early voting is February 21 – March 11 at the Haralson County Courthouse (4485 GA-120,  Buchanan, GA) Election date is March 15th.

These transportation projects would otherwise be paid for with General Fund and property tax revenues. Governments cannot use TSPLOST funds to pay for operating expenses such as personnel salaries or ongoing expenses.

The City of Tallapoosa (COT) is committed to transparency in the TSPLOST program. In the original 2017 TSPLOST proposal, the goal of the COT was to pave long streets designed to provide access to residential areas.  Several streets were proposed.  As of February 2022, Arbacoochee Road, Stone Mountain Street and West Atlanta Street have been completed with TSPLOST funds. Weather permitting, West Lipham Street and Broad Street will be paved by the end of 2022.

If approved by voters, the COT could receive up to 3.3 million for transportation infrastructure in a TSPLOST renewal.  A list of approximately 44 streets is provided below of possible projects identified and approved by the city council as part of the TSPLOST 2 referendum.

Anyone—residents, visitors, businesses, and tourists – who buy taxable products or services inside Haralson County will pay this 1% sales tax.
