Public Notices: Reminder of Changes in Billing

Aug 7, 2024 | Announcements

Customers will soon see changes in water, trash pick up, and late fee assessment.

Seasonal Reconnection Charge
In May 2024, the City of Tallapoosa began assessing a seasonal reconnection charge if the gas service is disconnected (for the summer months) and then reconnected (for the fall/winter) at a single location.
Residential fee – $75.00
Commercial fee – $150.00
This change is due to changes made by the Public Service Commission on how public works must treat reconnections.

Late Fees and Late Notices
The City of Tallapoosa will no longer mail late charge notices; however, the city will continue to assess and collect late fees. Also approved is a new late fee policy for the city on unpaid bills.  Late fees will be assessed on each monthly bill based on the account balance. Late fees will be calculated at a rate of 10% of the delinquent amount, or $10, whichever amount is greater.  This new late fee assessment will begin September 1st.

New Water Leak Protection Program
The City of Tallapoosa has implemented a new Leak Protection Program to cover excess costs resulting from unexpected water leaks. On the July 2024 bill, residential customers will see a $2.00 charge, and commercial and industrial customers will see a $10.00 charge automatically generated to each individually metered customer’s monthly bill.
If you feel that the Leak Protection Program is unsuitable for your needs, you can opt out. Notify the City of Tallapoosa in writing, and upon receipt of your notice, the leak protection service charge will be promptly removed from your bill. This flexibility allows you to make decisions that best align with your circumstances. However, it’s important to note that once the protection program is removed, you accept full responsibility for any high bills caused by leaks, and no adjustments will be made to your account.
The leak protection program covers the customer for one occurrence (leak) per year that could incorporate a maximum of two (2) billing cycles. The maximum leak protection benefit is $500.00 for residential customers and $1,000 for commercial and industrial customers. Any approved adjustment will be applied directly to your account in the next billing cycle. Proof of the repaired leak must be presented before adjustment can be made to the account.
The adjustment and subsequent credit amount will be based on your average water usage for the six (6) months immediately preceding the leak. Suppose a customer has a leak and has been a customer for less than six (6) months. In that case, management may adjust based on the usage since becoming a customer or defer adjusting until there are six (6) months of usage history.
Leak protection does not cover the cost of repairing the leak, filling a pool, hot tub or water storage tank, running a faucet/spigot due to negligence, or events such as lawn care or dripping water due to freezing weather.
